We love welcoming new families into our practice. Having your first child can be exciting and overwhelming, and you are sure to have many questions. Prenatal consults provide a time for you to meet with one of our pediatric providers, get to know them and their bedside manner, as well as ask all of those questions you have been saving. It also allows us to get to know you! Additionally, we can be informed of any complications during your pregnancy that need to be addressed once your baby is born. Below are frequently asked questions we get at Prenatal Consults. We hope you find our answers helpful!
Will my pediatrician see my baby in the hospital once they are born?
We have hospital privileges at Renown Regional Medical Center, so YES, once your baby is born, someone from our rounding group will see your baby each day you and your baby are in the hospital (including weekends and holidays).
If you deliver at Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center, there are pediatric hospitalists that see the baby in the hospital. We will see the baby in our office after you are discharged.
How does my pediatrician know my baby has been born?
If you deliver at Renown, add the name of your pediatrician to your registration, and the hospital will notify us once the baby is born. Easy!
If you deliver at Northern Nevada Sierra, just call the office once you are being discharged, and we’ll schedule your baby’s first checkup.
If I would like my baby to have a circumcision, who does that and when?
Most circumcisions happen before your baby is discharged. At Renown, the circumcision will be done by the pediatrician in our rounding group. At Northern Nevada Sierra, the circumcision will be performed by the hospitalist. Some babies have anatomic variants that may delay circumcision until they are 6-9 months of age (not very common). You can discuss circumcision with your pediatric provider at your consultation and again in the hospital.
When is my first visit to my pediatrician after discharge, and when are the well visits?
We see babies 1-3 days after discharge. This visit is to check in to see how you and your baby are doing. We will assess for jaundice (yellowing of the skin), and check your babies weight. This is a great visit to ask a lot of your questions as well.
We see A LOT of each other that first year. Routine check-ups are at: 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months of age. After 2 years of age, we see your child yearly until they are 18 years old and graduate from us!
When do vaccinations start?
We recommend that your baby get the Hepatitis B in the hospital before discharge. After that, childhood vaccines begin at 2 months of age.
Do you have any lactation support in the office?
We have a lactation educator that will call you to check in after your baby is born and can meet with you in the office for guidance.
Do you have any good resources/advice for a first-time parent?
Enjoy your baby and get some rest when you can. Self-care is a very important part of being a parent. If you have questions, Dr. Google can be a little overwhelming, so we recommend visiting healthychildren.org for information. We also have a symptom checker on our website, so you can utilize that as well.
We know you may have many other questions that we didn’t cover, so remember to write those questions down. We look forward to meeting you!
